The Arizona Pursuit

A Rescue Becomes a Flight
The pursuit
John Carter follows James K. Powell’s trail after spotting riders closing on his friend. He finds Powell mortally wounded among hostile warriors and carries the body away.
The cave
A strange vapor renders Carter immobile inside a cave. When he rises outside his lifeless body, he has crossed the first boundary between death and an unexplained new life.
The Call of Mars

The Red Star’s Pull
A familiar beacon
Standing above the Arizona landscape, Carter fixes his attention on Mars. His fascination with the red planet becomes an irresistible force rather than a passing act of stargazing.
Sudden departure
He closes his eyes, reaches toward the planet, and feels himself pulled through darkness and cold. The transition leaves him on Mars without any explanation he can offer.
The Thark Captive

A Stranger Among Warriors
Discovery and capture
Carter awakens naked on Barsoom and discovers that his Earth-trained body gives him extraordinary jumping power under Martian gravity. The feat changes the Green Martians’ intention from killing him to keeping him.
A conditional status
He is brought to the abandoned city of Korad and treated as a captive, yet physical prowess earns him attention and an unusual degree of freedom. Survival depends on reading unfamiliar customs quickly.
The Prisoner Becomes a Champion

Captivity Across the Sea Bottoms
Honor through combat
Carter wins standing among the Tharks by fighting and killing challengers, even as he rejects their cruelty toward Dejah Thoris. His new rank protects him but also makes him conspicuous.
Capture and spectacle
An escape attempt fails, and the Warhoons take him prisoner. In their arena, he and Kantos Kan survive deadly contests by using skill, timing, and deception rather than accepting the expected execution.
Return to the Arizona Cave

The Journey Ends Elsewhere
A last attempt
After helping restore the atmosphere on Mars, Carter loses consciousness beside the Atmosphere Plant. When he awakens, he is back in the Arizona cave, wearing the decayed clothes of his former life.
Separation renewed
He sees Earth rather than Barsoom and cannot know whether Dejah Thoris survived the crisis. The return closes his physical journey while deepening the emotional distance that shapes his account.
